Okružná Lookout Tower

Okružná Lookout Tower It is a lovely destination for visitors looking for a short and easy trip in the local area Prešov. It is situated in an area known as „Na bani“ within the cadastral district of Okružná, on the northern edge Slanské hills. Thanks to its easy accessibility and short route, it is suitable for families with children, older people, leisure hikers and cyclists alike. The trip does not require any particular level of fitness or strenuous preparation, and can also be undertaken as a short stopover whilst exploring the Šariš region.

Construction of the viewing tower

The observation tower was built in 2019 from wooden beams anchored to a concrete foundation. It stands 8.3 metres tall and is situated at an altitude of approximately 425 metres. It was designed and built by Jozef Sukovský of the Okružná Parish Charity. The structure has two viewing levels and faces in all directions, offering a panoramic view of the village and the surrounding countryside.

From the top of the observation tower, you can see the surrounding villages, the undulating landscape of the Šariš region and the striking silhouette of Kapušany Castle. On a clear day, you can even make out the peaks of the High Tatras on the horizon. The views change with the seasons – in spring and summer, the surroundings are dominated by greenery; in autumn, the landscape takes on a variety of colours; and on clear winter days, visibility can be even better. As there are taller trees in the surrounding area, more unobstructed views can be expected particularly outside the main growing season.

The tower forms part of a leisure trail leading along the crest of the old mine to a spring with drinking water. A visit need not, therefore, end with just a climb up to the observation tower. Visitors can continue on a peaceful stroll, relax in the countryside and discover the hidden corners around the village. About 50 metres south of the observation tower is a rest area with a carved wooden cross, also created by Jozef Sukovský. The site thus combines views, time spent in nature and small elements of the local spiritual tradition.

The route to the viewing tower

The easiest route starts from the western end of the village of Okružná. The route continues along a tarmac road, and wooden directional arrows guide visitors to the viewing tower. The path is not marked as a traditional colour-coded hiking trail, so it is necessary to follow the local signposting. The local cemetery can also serve as a landmark – on arriving in the village, continue in its direction, then turn right and the path leads up the hill to the viewing tower.

The route from the western part of the village is approximately 800 metres long and the climb takes about ten minutes. It is an easy walk that even younger children can manage. The surface is paved and the site is accessible not only on foot but also by bike. A visit can be combined with a cycle ride around the area, as a regional cycle route runs nearby. However, in the event of rain, snow or black ice, please be aware that the path surface and the wooden steps leading up to the lookout tower may be slippery.

The viewing tower is freely accessible with no admission charge and, according to available tourist sources, is open all year round. There is no ticket office, visitor centre or refreshment facilities in the vicinity, so it is advisable to bring your own water and a light snack. Although the relaxation trail includes a spring listed as a source of drinking water, when planning your trip it is safer not to rely solely on its current availability.

Visitors arriving by public transport can alight at the bus stop in the village of Okružná. From the centre of the village, it takes about 15 minutes to walk to the viewing tower. The nearest railway station is Kapušany, from where you will need to continue by bus, bicycle or other means of transport to Okružná.

You can drive to the western edge of the built-up area of the village and park your car in a suitable spot at the end of the local road, so as not to obstruct residents or traffic. In practical terms, therefore, you should expect to have to make do with informal parking in the village rather than a designated car park directly by the tower.

Okružná Observation Tower It is the ideal spot for a short family outing, a peaceful stroll or a stop-off during a cycle tour. Its advantages include its proximity to the village, an easy route, free entry and pleasant views without the need for a long mountain climb. You can plan a visit at any time of year, although the best experience is on days with clear weather and good visibility.
